How to Use the Revolut App: A Complete Beginner's Tutorial

Master the Revolut app with this beginner's guide. Learn to manage multi-currency accounts, international transfers, and investment features.

Revolut has become one of the most versatile digital banking apps available, especially for people who regularly send money abroad, travel frequently, or want to manage investments without opening a separate brokerage account. This tutorial walks through every major feature the app offers — from multi-currency accounts to RevPoints — based on a hands-on walkthrough of the platform.

Getting Started with Multi-Currency Accounts

One of the most powerful features of Revolut is the ability to hold money in multiple currencies simultaneously. In the tutorial walkthrough, accounts in British pounds, Chinese yen, and euros were already active — and adding a new currency takes under two minutes.

To add a new currency account:

  1. Tap More on the right side of the main dashboard.
  2. Select Add product and accounts.
  3. Tap Currency account and choose your desired currency (for example, USD).

Once the account is open, you can fund it in two ways: add money directly (for example, from Apple Pay) or share the account's local details with someone who can transfer funds to you. Each currency account comes with country-specific routing information — euro accounts include an IBAN, and USD accounts include US routing numbers — so others can pay you as if you held a local bank account in that country. Revolut supports up to 35 different currencies.

Exchanging Between Currencies

To move money between your currency accounts, tap Move and select the source account. You can then type in the amount you want to convert. The app displays the mid-market exchange rate in real time — during the walkthrough, 1 euro converted to 1.16 USD. On weekdays, no extra fees are charged on currency exchanges, making it a cost-effective option for regular international transactions.

Managing Your Revolut Cards

Revolut offers physical cards (plastic, metal, or platinum) and virtual cards. Virtual cards are available instantly within the app — no waiting for delivery — and can be added directly to Apple Wallet for contactless payments.

To create a virtual card:

  1. Tap the card icon in the top-right corner of the app.
  2. Select Add new card.
  3. Choose a card color (for example, black) and give it a label such as "Vacation Card."
  4. Tap Get a card for free to confirm.
  5. Add the card to your Apple Wallet to start paying with your phone immediately.

When you pay abroad with a Revolut card, the amount is automatically deducted from the matching currency account. For example, paying in Switzerland deducts from your Swiss franc account, so you always pay in the local currency at Revolut's exchange rate rather than a bank's less favorable rate.

Physical cards can be ordered from the same card settings menu and are delivered to your registered home address.

Investing in Stocks, ETFs, and Crypto

Revolut goes well beyond basic banking by offering access to financial markets directly inside the app. The Invest section covers stocks, ETFs, exchange-traded products (ETPs), and bonds.

Buying Stocks

Tap Invest, then Stocks. The app shows popular picks and top movers for the week. You can search for any stock by name — for example, searching "Apple" brings up the Apple stock page immediately. Each listing shows a price chart across multiple timeframes along with key data: market cap, price-to-earnings ratio, and annual earnings per share. To buy, tap Buy, enter either a cash amount or a number of shares, and confirm the order.

Buying Crypto

The crypto section works the same way as stocks but covers a different asset class. Tap Crypto, then Trade to browse Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other major coins. The app shows daily, weekly, and monthly charts. You can buy a specific euro or dollar amount, review the order, and confirm. A notable feature: you can transfer purchased crypto out to an external wallet, so your holdings are not locked inside Revolut.

Important: Investing in stocks or crypto carries risk. Always conduct your own research and consider consulting a qualified financial professional before making investment decisions.

Making International Payments

The Payments tab handles all outgoing transfers. Tap the + icon in the top-right corner to start a new payment. You have two main options:

  • RevTag: Every Revolut user has a unique RevTag, similar to a PayPal handle. Entering another user's RevTag sends money instantly between Revolut accounts.
  • Bank transfer: Select Bank, choose whether the recipient is an individual or business, select the country (for example, Germany), confirm the currency (euro), and enter the IBAN, first name, last name, and optionally an email address so the recipient is notified when the transfer completes.

You can also scan a QR code — for instance, from a printed invoice — by tapping the QR icon in the top-right corner of the payments screen. This routes funds to the account encoded in the QR without manual data entry.

Understanding RevPoints

RevPoints is Revolut's loyalty rewards program, comparable to points systems on traditional credit cards. On the Premium plan shown in the walkthrough, every 4 euros spent earns 1 point. Points accumulate passively as you use your Revolut card for everyday purchases.

What you can redeem RevPoints for:

  • Airline miles
  • Hotel stays
  • Airport lounge access
  • Fast-track airport lanes
  • eSIM data plans
  • Gift cards
  • Items from the Revolut shop

The redemption options make RevPoints particularly useful for frequent travelers, since points earned on routine spending can offset travel costs that would otherwise require cash.

Revolut for Business

If you run a company or freelance business, Revolut also offers a dedicated business account with additional features for professional financial management. You can sign up at Revolut for Business separately from a personal account.

Recommendation

Revolut is a genuinely useful app for anyone who deals with multiple currencies, travels regularly, or wants to manage basic investments without juggling separate services. The multi-currency accounts with local routing details, the instant virtual cards, and the integrated stock and crypto trading cover a wide range of financial needs in one place. The RevPoints loyalty program adds tangible value if you use the card consistently.
