How to Buy a Domain From IONOS: Registration Guide

Follow my IONOS domain registration walkthrough: search for a name, review optional extras and renewal prices, complete checkout, and connect your website.

Buying a domain gives your website a memorable address, but it is worth checking more than the introductory price. In this guide, I follow the IONOS registration process from my video: searching for a name, choosing domain-only registration, reviewing extras, and connecting the address to a website.

You can search for your domain at IONOS to follow along. This is a partner link, and I may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. Promotional prices vary, so rely on the current checkout rather than the examples in the recording.

Search for Your Preferred Domain

Enter the name you want into the domain search field and run the availability check. In the demonstration, I search for julian-tutorials.com as an example for my YouTube tutorials.

An available name can be added to the cart. If the first choice is taken, review the suggested alternatives or use the name-generation option shown in the video. IONOS also presents different extensions, such as .org or .online.

As practical naming advice, choose something easy to spell and appropriate for your project. Availability alone does not tell you whether a name is a good brand choice or whether someone else has rights to it.

Compare the Introductory and Renewal Prices

The recording shows an introductory offer for the example domain. It is not a promise that the same name, extension, country, or registration period will have the same price when you buy.

Before continuing, check:

  • The initial registration charge.
  • The length of the initial term.
  • The renewal price and renewal frequency.
  • Taxes and any services included only temporarily.

Compare the full order total rather than focusing on a large discount percentage. A first-year promotion is not the same as a permanent annual price.

Choose Domain Only or Add Services Deliberately

During checkout, the video shows options for domain-only registration, professional email, hosting, and a website builder. For this tutorial, I select domain only because the goal is to register the address.

You do not need to buy a hosting bundle simply to own a domain. You can connect it to an existing website provider later. Email and hosting are separate decisions, even when a checkout offers them together.

The demonstration also includes a Domain Guard add-on. I remove it in my own purchase, but that is a personal choice rather than a recommendation for every reader. Review the service, its renewal cost, and your security needs before deciding.

Review the Term and Complete Checkout

Select a registration period that fits your plans. I choose two years in the video, but a longer term is not automatically the best value for every domain.

Check the spelling, extension, contact information, optional products, renewal settings, and final charge before paying. After the purchase is completed, the domain appears in the IONOS dashboard.

Keep the receipt and account recovery details somewhere secure. As practical advice, make sure you can access the email address associated with the registration in case verification or renewal notices arrive.

Connect the Domain to Your Website

The video demonstrates a nameserver-based connection. First, open your website builder's domain setup and enter the domain you purchased. Then follow the connection instructions it provides.

If the instructions specify nameservers, enter those values in the nameserver settings for your domain at IONOS. Some providers instead ask you to add DNS records, so use the method your actual website provider supplies.

Save the changes and allow time for them to propagate. The recording mentions up to 24 hours as an example; actual timing can vary. Registering a domain and finishing the connection to a live website are separate steps.

My Recommendation

Start by checking your preferred IONOS domain, then review the renewal cost and remove any extras you do not need. Once registration is complete, follow your website provider's connection instructions rather than guessing the DNS settings.
